Back in the day...

My husband's grandfather, "George Chickering," is the man on the very front of the steam engine, far right. He was the engineer in the early 1920's. This photo hangs near the entrance of "Camp 18" on Hwy. 26. We have admired the photo for years, but have been unable to find a copy...so, I tried capturing it with my digital camera...

That is very cool, that you know that is your husband's grandfather, and you got a good image of the picture. My Dad was an engineer from the next generation, but he worked on steam engines until they went to deisel.

A great piece of history. I'm glad your copy came out well. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That's so neat, Vita. Oddly enough, I'm from Oklahoma and my Grandmother Boggs (Ma-maw) came from Arkansas. Her father, William Ross Hudspeth, came out to Oregon in the 1920's to work as a Lumberjack, while the family stayed in OK. He told her, "I was driving a small truck behind a big log truck. The log truck was so big and so tall that I drove my little truck under its wheels and it kept me out of the rain!"

Oh-oh. I meant to say "d-i-e-s-e-l" because "i before e except after c" and there's no "c". I love your Ma-maw's story about her father. He must have been quite a guy. My Dad came to Oregon with his parents from Oklahoma in the 30's to look for work. (He was in high school.) In the 20's they moved from Kansas to Oklahoma, so may have missed out on seeing your great grandfather.
